In My Mailbox (5)

Hey guys! In My Mailbox is a meme hosted by Kristi over at The Story Siren! Go check it out!

This week we actually have books! Yay! And a really big moment of excitement for me, Amanda. (Several moments actually! Well, to the books!

Amanda's mailbox:
This week, I received my first ARC! AND Harlequin sent some awesome books for a future giveaway. :) Also, I have one more thing that I was really excited about, and I don't mean to brag about it! Well anyways, check it out!

From Harlequin:
My Soul to Save by Rachel Vincent
My Soul to Keep by Rachel Vincent

ARCs (from Star Book Tours.):
Grace by Elizabeth Scott <----- my first ARC EVER!

Bought:
Forget You by Jennifer Echols <---- from B & N

And, the thing I told you I was UBER excited about! Okay, so.... the other day I went to B&N... and I bought a Nook! I LOVE it so far. And trust me, I didn't put this on here to brag. I'm just SO EXCITED! I swear, I am NOT a spoiled teenager. I did have to pay for part of it, and the cover, and I have to pay for the insurance when I decide to get it. I just posted this because I'm uber excited and I want to hear your guys' opinions on the Nook, Kindle, iPad, Sony ereader etc. Tell me what you think!

Shelbie's Malibox-

I got my first ARC's! and I also got a Nook! i feel like it's weird to write it again because I did a little vlog about them... but I'll do it as an offical IMM post too :)

From the Actual Mailbox:
Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick
Matched by Ally Condie
E-Books:
( I just downloaded all the free classic books :) )
Room With A View by E.M. Forster
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
Dracula by Bram Stoker
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
(Yep, all those books and didn't spend a penny. That is if you don't count buying the actual e-reader....)
Sorry we don't have a vlog this week! But due to the fact that Amanda is out of town, there is no vlog! And there is no vlog next week because Shelbie will be out of town that week!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend and Happy Fantasyfest!

This weekly BOOK PARTY is an awesome opportunity for book bloggers to connect with other book lovers, make new friends, support each other, and generally just share our love of books! Who is your favorite new-to-you author so far this year?

Shelbie's Answer:
Wow. This is hard because some books I can't remember if I started reading last year or this year... I think mine is Holly Black. I loved White Cat so much! It was fantabulous! I am looking forward to reading her other books!

Shelbie

Booking Through Thursday (4)

Gettin back into the swing of things with another Booking Through Thursday! Wanna join the fun? Click the link and comment on the BTT website or comment below! I would love to read your answers!

Which fictional character (or group of characters) would you like to spend a day at the beach with? Why would he/she/they make good beach buddies?

Shelbie's Answer:
Two words. Jace Wayland. (from City of Bones by Cassandra Clare) Why? Hello man candy! Who wouldn't like to soak up rays with Jace all day? And if a ravenous monster comes to attack the beach I know I'd be covered because Jace can hold his own and protect me while making witty remarks and looking so utterly attractive!
Amanda's Answer:
So, Shelbie said I wouldn't be able to make this one, because I'm out of town. However, I have a little bit of time before I leave and will hurry to get it done right now! Hmmmm Shelbie is right, however, and I do agree on the point of Jace. Boy what I would give to see HIM shirtless. BUT I recently read a book called The Boys Next Door by Jennifer Echols, and I think Adam would be a pretty good choice! The only downside? Adam gets jealous easily. But hey, if ravenous monsters show up and I have to call Jace and Adam gets jealous, I wouldn't mine being protected from monsters by hot guys and being fought over. As long as their faces still come out pretty :)
Happy Thursday and leave comments with what you thought of my beach buddy and links to yours!

xoxo,

Shelbie

Waiting on Wednesday (2)

'm pretty sure this is the first time I've done this meme... But I'm not sure so this might be two or it might be one.... anywho, "Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating! If you wanna participate go ahead and check out the website and sign up! I'd love to hear what your waiting on! :)

Okay, guys, I am waiting on SO MANY BOOKS, but I think I'm going to do the one that I'm going to get next (that isn't already out yet :) ) and that's Low Red Moon by Ivy Devlin which, when it comes, will be my FIRST ARC EVER!!! How exciting is that!?! When I get it I'm going to film myself opening the package and post it on the blog like the dork I am, so you can look forward to that! lol

Avery Hood is reeling from the loss of her parents–and the fact that she can’t remember what happened to them even though she was there.
She’s struggling to adjust to life without them, and to living with her grandmother, when she meets Ben, who isn’t like any guy she’s ever met before.
It turns out there’s a reason why, and Ben’s secret may hold the key to Avery finding out what happened to her parents…

But what if that secret changes everything she knows about–and feels for–Ben?

Amanda's pick:

Okay, so..... I usually don't do this meme because I am too lazy or can't decide on just one and don't want to give you the uber long list. But... I chose to put Infinite Days by Rebecca Maizel up here because I've been glued to her blog and cannot WAIT until the 3rd.

"Throughout all my histories, I found no one I loved more than you...no one."

Those were some of Rhode's last words to me. The last time he would pronounce his love. The last time I would see his face.
It was the first time in 592 years I could take a breath. Lay in the sun. Taste.
Rhode sacrificed himself so I, Lenah Beaudonte, could be human again. So I could stop the blood lust.
I never expected to fall in love with someone else that wasn't Rhode.
But Justin was...daring. Exciting. More beautiful than I could dream.
I never expected to be sixteen again...then again, I never expected my past to come back and haunt me...

Comment with what you're waiting on and let me know what you think of Low Red Moon, Thanks guys!

Apperently We Won Something?!

So... we won the versatile blogger award? We won it from the awesome Amelia from The Authoress!

This is how the award works:
Shout from the mountaintop and slap this up all over your blog. :) Link back to the person who gave you the award.

Share seven things about yourself.

Once you're done doing a happy dance, pass this award along to 15 other blogs. It can be awarded for any reason.

Make sure you contact the bloggers so that they know they've won! :)

So I guess I'll post seven things about me and Amanda will if she wants....

Shelbie's 7 Things:

1. I'll be a sophomore in high school this year!
2. I'm a dancer. I love jazz and Musical Theatre dancing!
3. I hate winter. Which is a great thing to hate for a Minnesota kid.
4. I am an avid Pretty Little Liars reader and watcher. I'm addicted!
5. My dream job is to run my own Architecture business.
6. I love back to school shopping. I could live in Office Max! :)
7. I have two dogs and a cat, all of which are completely spoiled! :)

Amanda's 7 things:
1. I am the only girl in my family, with one little brother and 2 older brothers. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing....
2. I am extremely happy. ALL.THE.TIME. Except for when someone does one of my pet peeves.
3. Speaking of pet peeves, I hate when people clean up my room. HATE IT. I'm really specific about where everything goes in there, especially my (color coded) closet.
4. The funny thing? I am NOT a neat person. I don't pick up a lot, my clothes are ALWAYS on the floor. I just happen to like everything in it's right place. And the right place for my clothes is on the floor. :)
5. I really do not like clothes shopping. I like getting new clothes, but I hate trying them on. But I do love shopping for books, cool stuff to hang on my walls, or listfully looking at awesome e-readers that I can't afford.
6. I happen to love Minnesota.  I can't stand the heat. But I don't neseccarily like the cold. I just love Minnesota. Especially in the Fall. Oh, and I love the lakes :) It's weird driving through other states and not seeing tons of lakes.
7. I'm a marketing dork. I'm in a marketing/business club at school called DECA, where you make d campaigns and stuff. It's really intense and I LOVE IT. But that does NOT mean I want to go into marketing when I grow up. Maybe I'll minor in it, but I actually want to be an anthropologist or a sociologist. And I think it'd be cool to work at a museum. :) But not one with paintings and stuff. The other kind, I forgot what it's called.
So Shelbie said we'd tag fourteen blogs, but that was a lie. Because she picked all the blogs that I love. :) I added a few notes to why we picked them though.

Okay I tag:

1. Holly from Good Golly Miss Holly - J showed this blog to me (Amanda) and I really loved the books she was reading, the fact that she had ARC tours, and all the other awesome things on her blog. Plus, Holly is just awesome :)
2. Vanessa and Isalys from Book Soulmates - We really liked this blog, because they reminded us a lot of ourselves. Shelbie and I became friends before we startd sharing books, but like them, we got uber close because we both loved books.
3. Jeremy from Novel Thoughts - Okay, it's just awesome to hear a guy's POV once in a while. And he has  pretty great one.
4. Kris from Voracious YAppetite - I personally love Kris's blog, for her UBER unique blog title, and the awesome names of her posts. (YAdda YAdda for example.) And if you go there, you will see for yourself that everything she writes is extremely well written and totally her own.
5. Monica from Ramblings of a Book Addict - Okay, love that hader, and LOVE her background! Plus, she's just awesome :) And it's kind of cool that she's just a year older than us. But don't quote me on that, it says 16 onher profile and that's what I'm going by!
6. Alyssa, Jake and Gregory from Teens Read and Write - Okay, this blog is totally unique. They review not only books, but movies too. And they always have lots of other fun stuff on their blog! Plus, their header is epic.
7. Pirate Penguin from Pirate Penguin Reads Oooh what to say what to say. Go to this blog and you'll find well writte reviews, and a really awesome header and background :)

So go forth and check out their blogs and go thank Amelia for giving us our first award! eep!

xoxo and Love Always,

Shelbie and Amanda

Booking Through Thursday (3)

Hey guys! First of all i am SO SORRY for being MIA, like Amanda said in her note below we've both been really focused on getting our summer reading books done, I want to get all of mine done by the first week in August, and I have two books left so I didn't really have time to fun read lately :( also, if you follow us on twitter (twitter.com/ShelbieAmanda) you'd know that I was sort of in a reading slum. But I promise to still be more active as much as I can! Anyway, to the actual meme,

Do you ever listen to book-related podcasts?
If so, which ones and why? (Include the URLs for people who aren’t familiar with them.)
Or, of course, there’s the flip side … did you even know that such a thing existed?

Shelbie's Answer-
Honestly, I only sort of barely know what podcasts are. Will someone explain them to me? I know they exist and I know authors do them sometimes, but I don't really know what they do exactly. So I guess that will answer my question of do you listen to them? No. :)
Amanda's Answer-
Ummmm I've heard of podcasts, but not book related ones. So honestly, no, I don't listen to them.
As always leave your responses below with links to your BTT and let us know what you thought of ours!

Combined Review: The Boys Next Door and Endless Summer by Jennifer Echols

(because this is a combined review, the stats are from the newest book, and combined page count)

Release date: 2007

Pages: 587

Age Group: Young Adult

Overall:

Lori can't wait for her summer at the lake. She loves wakeboarding and hanging with her friends - including the two hotties next door. With the Vader brothers, she's always been just one of the guys. Now that she's turning sixteen, she wants to be seen as one of the girls, especially in the eyes of Sean, the older brother. But that's not going to happen - not if the younger brother, Adam, can help it.

Lori plans to make Sean jealous by spending time with Adam. Adam has plans of his own for Lori. As the air heats up, so does this love triangle. Will Lori's romantic summer melt into one hot mess?

Okay, first off, I suppose I should explain why I am doing a joint review. Well, I went to Barnes and Noble, and ended up getting a book that said Endless Summer on the front, instead of Wild Roses by Deb Caletti, which I went to Barnes and Noble for in the first place. Well, I thought it was just one huge book, not two seperate books. But I kind of liked reading it this way, because then I could go straight to the sequel, and it actually felt like one book because the second book picked up exactly where the first left off. Anyways, I'll go to the review now. Notice that there are spoilers for the first book in here, and I'll make sure to put *SPOILER* in front of them. Okay, to the review!

First off, lets just make it clear that I love love triangles. Which is the main reason I bought this book. So of course, I absolutely adored these books! First off, I guess I'll start with the characters. Oh my my, Jennifer Echols really knows how to make fun and unique characters. Though Lori sometimes gets annoying with the little not so fool proof schemes she makes to solve problems, she is quite loveable and relatable. I found myself laughing aloud throughout the book as she tried to be all grown up and "sexy." She was constantly trying things that really were not for her. Like slinky tops, high heels, and heavy eye makeup. One scene I escpecially love with her is in the beginning of The Boys Next Door. A choice quote between here and Mrs. Vader. Lori: "Notice anything different?" Mrs. Vader: "I'm using the wrong font?" Lori: "Notice anything different about my boobs?" Mrs. Vader: "You changed your boobs?" Lori: "I'm showing my boobs." Even though Lori tends to get in a lot of trouble, you end up loving her by the end of the book. Echols also is a genius at adding signiture phrases to her characters, such as Adam's "Bikini or what?" or "S bend or what?", his or what phrase gets used a lot. I also loved the way she had her characters interact. Growing up with three brothers, I very much understood the crude jokes that the boys used in these books. Not only were the characters fantastic, but so was the plot. There was constant flirting, jealousy, and scheming going on throughout both books. And *SPOILER* there were always little bumps in the road for Adam and Lori, even after the first book when you thought that all would be fine in their relationship. * END SPOILER * It was really interesting to watch (or read in this case) the guys and girls circling each other and getting into jealous fits that were sometimes adorable. *cough* Adam *cough*. All in all, the plot was really wonderful throughout both books. (Although the amount of problems that the characters caused in the second book were just ridiculous, a reason I liked the first book better.) As for the writing, Echols' writing was not fantastic, but it was pretty dang good. The only problem I had was in the second book when the POV changes (my one dislike about the book, because I liked Lori's POV better.) Echols' had a little trouble portraying Adam's POV, though she did an okay job. However, I did love Echols' writing when it came to the incredibly adorable moments. Even though she sometimes has her troubles with character portrayal, she can sure write a darn good make up scene. (Which there are a lot of in both of the books, trust me.) She writes beautiful endings, (this one made me literally sigh), creates unique characters, and definitely doesn't let the plot get boring. All in all, Jennifer Echols made a wonderful summer romance read that had me swooning.

Hope you liked the review!

Amanda

A Quick Question for All of You

Hey Guys so I was stalking this really cool website called Page to Premiere which is a website that follows books as they go from the book to the big screen, and i realised that a lot of books are optioned being made into movies, here's a few: Before I Fall, Shiver, Wicked Lovely, Wings, Wake, Flipped, Beautiful Creatures, Hunger Games, Mortal Instruments, The Host, Gone, Perks of Being A Wallflower, Fallen, Gallagher Girls, Heist Society... just a note, these are OPTIONED so no need to get overly angry or excited just yet, because movies can be dropped just as fast as they got picked up.. which brings me to my question... is there a certain book or series that you would just die if it got made into a movie? Is there just no right way to play out the books the way they are so they work on the big screen?

Let me know, and sorry this wasn't exactly "quick" :)

xoxo,

She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend...more For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch came along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment.

But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure who to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.

For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.

Okay, first thing you notice when you look at this book. The BEYOND beautiful cover, major props to James Porto, for both this cover and the next in the series, Crescendo, both are insanely beautiful!

Second, Becca's writing is FANTASTIC (I seem to be using a lot of caps and italic, sorry!) her characters are so in depth, I love Nora's strong willed-ness, and her outlook on life, she was an awesome main character/heroine. Patch, oh Patch, he is the epitome of the "bad boy" branch on my list of attractive traits, along with sexy, witty, protective, and overall attractive, need I say more? Last, Vee, she seems like an either you love her or you hate her character, I happened to really like her, she had some really funny lines, and some people are like wow she's so stupid, but then I think if one of my friends said that some guy who seemed like a really nice guy was a murderer I would think they were going a little crazy.

I think the plot is my favourite part of this book. To start, seems that all intense relationships start out in science class. Twilight, Perfect Chemistry, Hush, Hush, does anyone have others? But, Hush, Hush is no different, intense relationship, starts with being partner in Biology. I don't want to give to much away because if you haven't already, I really want you to read this book! But the plot had a perfect mix of romance and scary scenes and twists and turns and an end that I didn't see coming!

Overall, if you have a way to get to a bookstore or the library and you haven't read Hush, Hush go, now!

Hey Guys, this is a weekly meme hosted by Booking Through Thursday, Amanda and I really enjoy this meme, and I hope you do too! Comment linking to your answer and tell us what you thought of ours!

When you think about “hot reading,” what does that make you think of? Beach reading? Steamy romances? Books that take place in hot climates? Or cold ones?

Shelbie's Answer -

Oh Gosh, When I think of "hot reading", I have no idea what I think of, probably either reading when it's terribly hot outside or where the books are really steamy and hot! I havn't really thought about it much though :)

Amanda's Answer-
Hot reading? Ummm..... I actually have no idea! Probably being unbearably hot underneath my bedcovers reading during a summer night or books with hot guys!

Like I said, comment with yours and let me know what you thought of ours!

Overall:

Okay, so it is currently 12:07 a.m. and I officially should be asleep since I have lots of things I'm doing tomorrow. (Hopefully I'll have time to do BTT before I leave.) But, since I haven't posted a review in a while, I decided I should. And what better book to start with than this amazing one? I feel like I'm a bad reviewer since I give basically everything five stars, but come on, the books I've read are just so GOOD! Anyways, to the review!

Basically I was very excited to read this book. And it definitely did not disappoint. Anyways, imagine a motley group of superheroes. One is gay, with the power of healing. Another is old and psychic, and a third has the power to make you really sick. Then there is extremely touchy Scarlett, who is angry all the time, and the team leader Golden boy, who has been put on probation from the League because of one teensy mistake. Imagine that, and you have Thom Creed's team. Thom is the son of an ex-superhero(who never had powers) who is fighting the secrets that he hides from his father. It doesn't exactly help that he is gay, has a thing for superheroes, and a dad who is the social outcast of the town(and really judgemental just FYI) because of a catastrophic event in the past. Thom's life changes when he starts to develop superpowers and is invited to try out for the League, a prestigious league of superheroes. And the others that have tried out are every bit as much of a misfit as he is. You will fall in love with this cast of D list superheroes that are unorganized yet miraculously save the day. I personally loved Typhoid Larry and Ruth (the person who makes people sick and the psychic.) Typhoid Larry was just adorable in all of his insecurities, and Ruth was the cool but crazy Grandma who knew the answer to everything (if not because she's wise, then because of her psychicness.) Moore wove a beautiful story with characters dancing (and sometimes stumbling) in and out of conflict throughout the whole thing. He also wrote a wonderful love interest, and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of love in this story. What shocked me the most, was how I reacted to all the superheroes. Read this book and go to Geeky heaven, because even if they aren't real superheroes, I like them better than your basic Spiderman or Batman. (Too many "mans", luckily there was only the one Uberman in this book.) The writing in this book was was a perfect blend of witty and hearfelt at all the right moments. A choice quote? "And Golden Boy, if you weren't so busy trying to be a one man rescue machine... Well, there may be no 'I' in team, but apparently there's a real big one in 'Kevin.'" And the ending, the ending had me on the edge of my seat! You find out who the villain is (a surprise, but not really if you paid attention like me), who the mysterious 'Dark Hero' (a possibly bad, possibly good mystery guy) is, and everyone resolves their character vs. character issues! The ending was beautiful, the characters were beautiful, the writing was beautiful, this whole freaking book was beautiful. I might use this for my July Challenge, not sure yet. Anyways, go read this freaking fantastical book!
